Capitol View United Methodist Church (Atlanta, Ga.) records, 1916-1991.

This collection is composed of the records of Capitol View United Methodist Church, encompassing the years 1916-1991. These materials have been arranged into eight series: Historical files, Church committees, Conference materials, Sunday School, Members, Printed material, Miscellaneous, and Addendum. Series I: Historical files contain church histories written from 1911-1980. Series II: Church committees consists of the records of the Administrative Board, Finance Committee, Building Committee, Council on Ministries, Pastoral Committee, and the Committee on Nominations and Personnel. The Administrative Board material contains meeting minutes from 1949-1983 and one folder of correspondence from 1971. The Building Committee material documents renovations of the educational building (1956-1958) and the sanctuary (1961-1962). Series III: Conference materials consist of quarterly conference reports, 1916-1969, and charge conference reports, 1970-1990. These contain reports of the local church committees and officials to the General Conference. Series IV: Sunday School records consist of the General Secretary-Treasurer's books; Deckner Bible class (Every-Ready Bible class) records; and Friendship class directories (1964-1983) and class rolls (1955-1965). The General Secretary-Treasurer's books are bound and contain attendance and collection statistics of Sunday School classes, 1935-1971. The Deckner Bible class material includes a class history, 1950; constitution and by-laws, 1949; monthly business meeting minutes, 1931-1955; a list of class officers, 1931-1948; and correspondence, 1931-1934. Series V: The Members series consists of directories of members, as well as church membership records and transfers. Series VI: Printed material includes church bulletins, 1935-1991; "The View" newsletter, 1971 and 1974; newspaper clippings; and photographs, ca. 1940s and 1957. Series VII: Miscellaneous records consists of general correspondence, 1966-1991, and an assortment of papers, including an inventory of church property (1950); the consecration service for the church parsonage, 1967; celebration service for the charter meeting of the Women's Society of Christian Service, 1968; "Capitol View Methodist Church: Your church"; a hymnal dedication list of donors; and a list of church staff, 1957-1958. Series VIII: Addendum consists of material added to the collection in February 1995. It contains records for the Woman's Society of Christian Service and the Friendship class. The Woman's Society of Christian Service material includes Treasurer's ledgers, 1953-1977; quarterly reports, 1953-1966; Treasurer's records, 1941-1944; Treasurer's remittances; Auxiliary Treasurer's record and report books, 1915-1917; and a record and report book, 1956-1964. The Friendship class material consists of the contents of a scrapbook; a photo album celebrating the class's thirty-third anniversary; membership books; and a scrapbook.

Capitol View Methodist Church was organized on November 11, 1911 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Carpenter, under the direction of the Rev. Joel R. Daves, Presiding Elder of the Atlanta district. Rev. L. B. Simpson was appointed pastor in December. The small congregation held services in the members' homes until 1912.
